For me, it less about emotion and more about reaching a position where less income is needed to be financially independent. That means getting rid of the income-sucking debt. Specifically, I want to be mortgage-free, not because of the financial freedom it provides, but because as a matter of principle I want to own my homestead outright, free of any outside interests.
